Check the workweek, not the pay period
Federal overtime is generally calculated for each fixed 168-hour workweek. Two weeks should not be averaged together to erase overtime.
This overtime pay calculator works out your overtime rate, overtime pay and total weekly gross pay from your hourly rate and hours.
| Part | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Regular pay | 40 × $20 | $800.00 |
| Overtime rate | $20 × 1.5 | $30.00/hr |
| Overtime pay | 5 × $30 | $150.00 |
| Weekly gross pay | $800 + $150 | $950.00 |
Multiply overtime hours by the regular hourly rate and the applicable multiplier, usually 1.5. Add that overtime pay to straight-time pay for the regular hours.
The general federal rule uses more than 40 hours in a fixed workweek for covered, nonexempt employees. State rules, exemptions and special industries can differ.
Federal law does not automatically make weekend or holiday hours overtime. Those hours can become overtime when they push covered work above the weekly threshold, and state law or an employer agreement may add a premium.
No. It estimates gross pay before withholding, benefits and other deductions.
The change most people mean is the federal “no tax on overtime” income-tax deduction. Starting with 2025 tax returns you can deduct qualified overtime pay — the part of overtime pay above your regular rate, shown here as the premium portion — up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 filing jointly). It phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 jointly), requires a valid Social Security number, and married couples must file jointly. It does not change the gross pay this calculator shows. Source: IRS.
Convert the minutes to a decimal: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 42 hours 30 minutes is 42.5 hours.
Calculate each workweek on its own and add the two results. Under the general federal rule, 50 hours one week and 30 the next is 10 overtime hours, not zero — the weeks are not averaged.
Time and a half is the common general federal rate, but state rules and employment agreements can require a different premium, including double time.
No. It estimates pay after you enter the rule that applies. Worker coverage, exemption, industry rules and state law require a fact-specific review.
